Little by little

Life is returning to normal around here. I don't want to jinx anything but the little one has been sleeping a lot better... which means more energy for his parents!!

I just got done having a wonderful wonderful weekend "off." My two girlfriends Joanna and Joni flew in from Chicago & NYC and we had a "girl's weekend." They spent the first night here at our home, meeting the baby & relaxing with us. The next morning the three of us headed to a full day at the beloved Ivy Spa. That place is so great because you don't just go there to get a massage or a facial or whatever. You spend the day. You  use their hot tub, sauna, steam, gym. We had lunch delivered (three hangar steaks!) from the super nice steak house on the ground floor. Then we padded down the skywalk to our hotel rooms at the Hilton where we decompressed before going out to an amazing dinner with a group of girls. Oh man. It was great!!

Today Cy, Arlo & I went to the aquarium at the Mall of America. We went there last week too. Both boys just LOVE to stare at all the different sea creatures cruising around. And I love everything about that outing too. I get to walk & feel like I get some activity/exercise. There's a starbucks right outside so I always walk through the fish with a latte. And there are plenty of places to go afterwards for a special treat. I took Cy& Arlo to a candy store today. Now I know where the phrase "like a kid in a candy store" comes from. That kid had so much fun! And he ended up with 3, yes a mere 3 gummy worms. Totally content.

So tonight we are supposed to be getting a huge snowstorm. Uncle Mike & I are supposed to be taking the boys to Cy's swim lessons because Patrick is out of town. And tomorrow Cy & I are supposed to go skiing... I just hope we can make it out of the driveway because I am not sure how I can shovel with two little ones milling around. I am sure I will figure it out though. Where there's a will, there's a way, right!?

A beautiful day of skiing - just Cy & I - no lessons.

what's going on?

Hi! What is going on with you? not much over here besides the usual insanity. I know this is total parent-speak, but Patrick and I are just getting used to this: someone (including dog) seems to be always NEEDING something at every single second of the day starting at about 5:30am and going til 8:30pm. Jackson needs walks and food precisely at 8am or 5pm or he goes bananas. Arlo needs boobs, spoon-fed purees, clean pants and to be held. Oh, and let's not forget the random "calming" he needs at all hours of the night. Cy needs... oh man where do I start? Cy needs lots of love and fun, praise for his puzzles and art, 3 meals served, snacks, his bottom wiped after he poops, reminders to do his chores, a LOT of laundry cleaned (he insists on a new outfit after nap which means 2 outfits a day at least!) and A LOT of fresh air and activity! Mom and Dad need, no, crave rest....
And that's how our days go!! We try not to let the kids rule the roost. We take them on outings that we enjoy and that get us some exercise too. We walked Lake Calhoun on Saturday and had the two boys strapped happily into their stroller for a good hour while we all took in the scenery. We bring them to restaurants where, albiet momentarily, someone else can take care of all of our needs! And lately we've been having our fair share of friends over. Friday night was great. The Knolls came over and Cy played with little Mary soooo nicely. They are both super well behaved happy little kids who got on fabulously. Can't say that for all of Cy's playdates. Sometimes he has little monster friends over who are out to destroy our house and teach him how to be naughty. :)
And so that is how life is these days.... scrambling to take care of everyone's needs, trying to find time to relax ourselves and still have some fun! Overall I'd say we are a happy little family. Frazzled and oftentimes exhausted, but content.

First trip to the dentist. Handled it like a pro. Actually enjoyed it. I truly believe it's because of Brother Bear in "The Berenstein Bears Visit The Dentist."

Ever wonder what a stay-at-home mommy does when she has the stomach flu?

Daddy & Arlo watching ESPN at 6am. Our new routine is to take Arlo down into the basement & play down there til his brother gets up an hour earlier.

Last official day of ski lessons for the season! Moms & skiers wore balloons on our hats/helmets. We are going to still meet up with some of our new ski friends and continue our Wednesday ski adventures as long as the winter will allow!

Boppa & Nana came over on Sunday morning to give Patrick & I a "sanity break." It took us a while to figure out what to do on a 9am Sunday morning date but I was pretty happy with the end result: brunch at a nice restaurant followed by pedicures! I don't think Patrick will be returning (although he should since he has claw toes!) because he was way too ticklish! I chose neon pink for my toes and I am loving them.

Nothing better than a baby asleep outside on a cold Minnesota winter day. Lots of crisp fresh air!

hope for sleep

Obsession: no matter what I am doing or what time of day or night it is, there is one subject that has been on my mind... SLEEP!!!

Our little Arlo has been keeping me up way too much. In the past week I have been averaging about 4-5 hours of broken sleep a night. It's ugly. He was doing good before then and then regressed. I think his cold sorta reverse-sleep trained him into waking at night. Cold's gone now though.

however, I have dedicated myself to sleep training this week. I have nothing (especially not sleep) to lose! So I have read a book that teaches specific ways of handling his night wakings and have started adhering to them. Last night was the first night and I think I got a couple more hours of sleep!

It's nothing to crazy. He's not crying for hours on end. In fact, I think he was crying more BEFORE I started this training because I'd be so deep in a sleep it'd take me a while to hear him.... and get the energy to go see him.

we will see how it goes! But man oh man would I like to drop this current obsession and move on to being interested in things like exercise (which, besides walking I have not done a lick of) and fitting back in to my cute clothes and swimsuit! Weight loss is going ok but I feel so sluggish every day that I eat whatever I want. And I want a social life back!!

With that said I am going to go wake up Arlo from his afternoon nap because it's 4pm and he's not allowed to sleep past 4 anymore! And then I am going to bundle up my boys and go on a big fat walk and enjoy the last few hours of sunshine!

Cy was literally rolling in mud the other day. He has a mud mustache in this pic.
